Muslims and DNA Tests: What a Leading Islamic Cleric Wants You to Know

In a recent lecture that has sparked widespread discussion, Dr. Sharafdeen Gbadebo, a prominent Islamic cleric, cautioned Muslim couples against the use of DNA tests to determine the paternity of children. He emphasized that such practices are not permissible under Islamic law and urged adherence to traditional Islamic procedures for resolving paternity doubts.

Dr. Gbadebo explained that Islam provides clear guidelines regarding paternity. He stated that doubting the paternity of a child born to one's lawful wife is un-Islamic. According to Islamic teachings, a child born within a lawful marriage is considered the offspring of the husband, and any doubts should be addressed through the Islamic procedure known as Lian.

Lian is a process where both the husband and wife take solemn oaths before God to affirm their positions regarding the paternity of a child. This procedure is considered the only acceptable method in Islam for resolving disputes over paternity.

The rise in the use of DNA testing for paternity verification has been notable, especially in Nigeria, where concerns about paternity fraud have led many to seek scientific confirmation. While DNA tests are scientifically reliable, Dr. Gbadebo cautioned that over-reliance on such methods could undermine the social and moral fabric of society.

He argued that resorting to DNA testing for paternity verification could lead to unnecessary disputes and conflicts within families and communities. Instead, he advocated for a return to traditional Islamic methods that promote unity and trust within the family unit.

While Dr. Gbadebo's views align with traditional Islamic teachings, some experts argue that in certain situations, DNA testing can serve as a tool for justice and clarity. They suggest that while traditional methods are important, there may be cases where scientific evidence is necessary to resolve disputes and ensure fairness.

The debate over the use of DNA testing for paternity verification highlights the intersection of science, religion, and societal norms. While Islamic teachings provide a framework for resolving such issues, the evolving nature of society and advancements in science continue to influence perspectives on this matter.
