Tinubu Says 27 State Governors Could Not Pay Salaries When He Assumed Office, Defends Economic Reforms
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended his administration's economic policies, insisting that Nigeria could have faced a much worse financial crisis if his government had not introduced major economic reforms.
The President made the remarks during his visit to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he addressed the economic challenges facing the country and explained why his administration believes its policies are necessary.
Tinubu claimed that when he assumed office in May 2023, 27 out of Nigeria's 36 state governors were struggling to meet their salary obligations. He also alleged that pension and gratuity payments were affected by the financial difficulties confronting the states.
According to the President, the situation could have deteriorated further without the difficult economic decisions taken by his administration.
Tinubu Acknowledges Nigerians' Economic Hardship
The President acknowledged that many Nigerians are still struggling with the rising cost of living and other economic difficulties.
He maintained, however, that his administration was taking responsibility for addressing the challenges and putting the country on a more sustainable financial path.
Tinubu also expressed confidence that Nigeria had moved beyond the risk of bankruptcy.
President Defends Education Financing Initiative
Tinubu further highlighted his administration's education financing initiatives, particularly the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
He said the programme was designed to reduce the financial burden on parents by providing eligible students with access to funding for their tertiary education.
The President also indicated that funds recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would support the education financing initiative.
Nigerians Continue to Debate Economic Reforms
Tinubu's comments come amid continued public discussions about the impact of his administration's economic policies.
While the Federal Government maintains that the reforms are necessary for long-term economic stability, many Nigerians continue to express concerns about inflation, living costs and financial pressures on households.
The debate over whether the reforms are delivering the expected benefits remains a major issue in Nigeria's economic and political discussions.
