Tinubu Urges Nigerian Army to Stay Out of Politics

President Bola Tinubu has once again emphasised the need for the Nigerian Army to remain non-partisan and stay clear of political affairs. While addressing senior military officers and troops, the President reminded them that their primary duty is the protection of the constitution, national security, and citizens, not involvement in political matters.

The Message to the Military

In his remarks, President Tinubu praised the military for their professionalism in handling security challenges and safeguarding elections in past years. He stressed that, to maintain the nation’s democratic stability, the military must not engage in partisan politics or support any political party.

“Your duty is to the nation and its people, not to political ambitions or agendas,” Tinubu reportedly said. This directive aligns with longstanding democratic principles in Nigeria, where the military is constitutionally required to remain neutral in politics.

Since the return to democracy in 1999, Nigerian leaders have consistently urged the armed forces to stay apolitical. These calls have been reinforced during election periods and times of political tension, ensuring that the military’s role remains focused on security, counter-terrorism, and peacekeeping.

The military’s apolitical stance is crucial for democratic governance, national stability, and public trust. Any involvement in partisan politics could undermine democracy and reignite historical tensions from past military interventions in governance.

President Tinubu’s directive serves as a timely reminder that the Nigerian Army’s loyalty is to the constitution, not political parties. As Nigeria continues to face complex security challenges, the message reinforces the importance of a professional, neutral military committed to protecting the nation and its democratic institutions.
