Nigeria is buzzing with shock and controversy as former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has been arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His arrest marks a major escalation in the federal government’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
According to multiple credible reports, EFCC operatives stormed Ngige’s Abuja residence and took him into custody.
His media aide confirmed the arrest, dismissing earlier rumors that he had been abducted or kidnapped.
Sources state that the arrest is connected to a widening investigation into alleged corruption, contract fraud, and abuse of office during Ngige’s time overseeing federal agencies, including the NSITF.
Ngige has been arraigned before an FCT High Court in Gwarinpa, Abuja.
The EFCC filed eight separate charges against him, including:
Fraudulent contract awards
Abuse of public office
Misappropriation of funds
Corrupt enrichment
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
In a dramatic turn, Justice Mariam Hassan ordered that Dr. Ngige be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre until the court hears and determines his bail application.
The courtroom was reportedly tense as EFCC prosecutors argued that releasing him immediately could jeopardize ongoing investigations.
The bail hearing is expected to follow in the coming days.
The arrest has triggered:
Heated political debates
Reactions from supporters and critics
Questions about selective justice
Renewed calls for full transparency in public office
Some Nigerians applaud the EFCC’s bold move, while others believe the timing is political.
Ngige’s legal team is preparing a robust defense, while EFCC lawyers insist they have strong evidence to proceed.
This case is poised to become one of Nigeria’s biggest political and corruption trials of the decade.
