Wike Denies Calling Naval Officer ‘Fool’ Amid Viral Video Controversy

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has denied claims that he insulted Naval Officer Lt. Yerima in a viral video that circulated widely on social media. According to the governor, his words were misinterpreted, and he never called Yerima a fool personally.

“What I meant was … you cannot be carrying out an illegal order … I didn’t say military you’re a fool … I know the role of the military,” Wike stated in a press briefing.

The video shows Wike addressing a dispute over land, during which he is alleged to have said:

“You are a very big fool … At the time I graduated, you were still in primary school.”

This has sparked debate across Nigeria, with some insisting Wike’s words were clearly insulting, while others support his claim that the video has been taken out of context.

Nigerians have been divided over the incident, with some calling for Wike to apologize to Lt. Yerima.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana formally requested President Tinubu to compel Wike to issue an apology, stating that public officials should respect military personnel.

Social media platforms have been flooded with opinions, memes, and debates about the appropriate conduct of public servants.

While Wike denies insulting Lt. Yerima personally, the viral video has stirred significant controversy. This incident highlights the power of social media in shaping public perception and the fine line politicians must walk in addressing sensitive matters.
