President Bola Tinubu recently ordered the withdrawal of police VIP escorts nationwide, aiming to redeploy officers to frontline security duties. As of late November 2025, over 11,500 police officers previously assigned to VIP protection have been redeployed.

The Nigeria Police Force officially stopped providing police escorts to private individuals.

VIP protection requests are now meant to be handled by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Some media sources indicate that unofficial VIP escort arrangements may still exist for those who can pay.

Analysts warn that corruption and informal arrangements might allow wealthy or influential individuals to secure private protection, even though it’s not officially sanctioned.

While the official ban on police VIP escorts is in effect, reports suggest some informal “escorts-for-pay” may continue — but no verified data confirms widespread practice.
