Tanzania’s Post-Election Crackdown: The Real Story Behind the Viral “22 Youths Jailed for Using President’s Speech” Claim

Over the past two weeks a storm of social-media posts claimed that “22 young people were jailed for life for using the president’s speech in videos.” That specific claim is misleading. What really happened is more complex: dozens (then hundreds) of people were charged with treason after violent post-election protests, some social-media personalities were among the accused, and the president later ordered pardons for many youths. Below I explain the timeline and cite the major sources.

Election and protests (Oct 29, 2025): Protests broke out after the presidential and parliamentary vote and reports that key opposition figures were barred. The unrest included clashes with security forces and curfews in some cities.

Mass treason charges (early November 2025): Prosecutors filed treason and related conspiracy charges against dozens — Reuters and Al Jazeera reported at least 145 people charged in court filings, with other outlets and opposition groups putting the number higher (some reports list 200–240 people). These charges relate to alleged roles in organising or inciting protests and violence — not a simple case of “using a speech.”

Social media and a few influencers: Among the accused were young people and at least one influencer reportedly connected to a viral video that used a presidential audio clip or referenced the protests. Social posts amplified this detail, and some outlets flagged that an influencer (named in several reports) faced very serious charges — but the headlines often jumped to “death penalty” or “life sentence” without court verdicts.

Presidential action (mid-November 2025): President Samia Suluhu Hassan ordered pardons or directed that treason charges be reviewed for youths who “simply followed the crowd” — directing authorities to distinguish between organisers/conspirators and those swept up in the unrest. Local reporting said the pardon targeted many of the youths arrested.

👀 Goodbye Reading Glasses? Eye Drops That Restore Near Vision in Just 1 Hour

A medical breakthrough may soon change how millions see the world. At the 2025 ESCRS Congress, scientists unveiled eye drops that could replace reading glasses and even surgery. 766 patients with presbyopia (age-related near vision loss) tested the drops. *Pilocarpine sharpened near focus. *Diclofenac reduced irritation. Most could read 2–3 extra lines just 1 hour after use. Vision improvements lasted up to 2 years with continued use. 80% maintained near vision after 1 year. Side effects were mild and temporary. 🌍 Why It Matters With 1.8 billion people worldwide affected by presbyopia, these drops could offer a non-invasive, affordable alternative to glasses or surgery. ⚠️ More large-scale trials are still needed, but this discovery could mark the beginning of a new era in eye care. 👉 If these drops were available today, would you try them? #VisionHealth #EyeCare #Presbyopia #MedicalInnovation #ScienceNews #HealthyAging #EyeDrops #DailyGist&Guide
