Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed renewed calls for his arrest, insisting that critics are misrepresenting his role in efforts to address banditry in Nigeria.
Gumi, a prominent cleric and mediator, argues that his engagement with armed groups is aimed at fostering peace and reducing violence. He recalled a notable 2021 intervention in Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Kaduna State, where he personally met with over 600 bandits, alongside police authorities, in an effort to encourage surrenders and reduce attacks.
According to Gumi, those demanding his arrest are motivated by emotional outrage rather than a clear understanding of the challenges of insecurity in northern Nigeria. He emphasizes that his actions have always been conducted with the knowledge and approval of security authorities, and that labeling his mediation as criminal undermines genuine peace efforts.
The cleric also highlighted that calls for his arrest could threaten constitutional free speech and advocacy for dialogue, framing his work as part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of banditry rather than enabling criminal activities.
As debates continue over the role of mediators in Nigeria’s fight against banditry, Gumi’s stance raises critical questions about how the government balances peace negotiations, law enforcement, and public accountability.
