The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that more than 700 individuals have been convicted for terrorism-related crimes across the country. This disclosure marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, terrorism financing, and extremist activities.
According to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the government prosecuted 1,743 suspects between 2017 and 2024. Out of this figure, 742 individuals were successfully convicted, while several others are still facing trial in ongoing terrorism cases.
The convictions include suspects involved in various terrorism offences, ranging from terrorist attacks, financing, logistics support, and recruitment activities. Some sentences extend from 20 to 70 years imprisonment, while others face life sentences and even the death penalty.
Officials emphasized that the convictions were achieved through joint coordination among the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Department of State Services (DSS), and federal prosecutors.
The government also confirmed that 888 suspects were discharged due to insufficient evidence, reflecting the rigorous judicial scrutiny applied to each case.
Nigeria’s sustained crackdown on terrorism demonstrates a growing commitment to restoring national peace and strengthening the rule of law. While challenges remain, these figures show that the judicial arm is actively supporting the country’s counter-terrorism operations.
Many Nigerians have welcomed the news, describing it as “long overdue.” However, some activists have called for greater transparency in how suspects are tried and sentenced, urging the government to balance justice with human rights considerations.
