Major General Biu Clarifies: Repentant Boko Haram Members Could Aspire to Any Position — Even President


A viral claim suggesting that repentant Boko Haram members can be forgiven and even become President is causing heated debate online. But what’s the truth?

This statement is not new. It traces back to 2019, when Major General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu, then General Officer Commanding the 7th Division and a senior leader in Operation Hadin Kai, made the remarks while encouraging Boko Haram fighters to surrender.

According to him, any insurgent who genuinely lays down arms, renounces violence, and completes rehabilitation “stands to aspire to any position in the country — even the presidency.”
The general emphasized that deradicalization and reintegration should be part of a long-term peace strategy, saying Nigeria must be willing to accept genuinely transformed individuals.

However, his statement was not a government policy or a direct promise. It was a motivational message aimed at convincing fighters to defect, not a blanket guarantee of political office.

There is no current law giving ex-Boko Haram fighters special political privileges — only the general’s stance that everyone deserves a chance at redemption if they truly change.
