Contrary to recent rumors, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has not issued a nationwide ban on open grazing by cattle rearers. Many Nigerians have been confused by media reports linking federal livestock reforms with a “ban” on pastoralists’ traditional grazing methods.
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development clarified that the government’s strategy is focused on:
Promoting modern ranching systems
Upgrading gazetted grazing reserves across the country
Ensuring a phased and organized transition for pastoralists
“There is no abrupt nationwide ban. Pastoralists still have access to grazing reserves while we develop structured ranching alternatives,” said a ministry spokesperson.
⚠️Some states in the South and Middle Belt have enacted state-level open grazing bans, leading to confusion about national policy.
Media reports often misinterpret federal efforts to curb farmer-herder clashes as an outright ban.
Open grazing remains legally possible under federal law, though regulated in some states.
FG is moving toward modern ranching and regulated grazing to reduce conflicts.
Rumors of a nationwide ban are misleading and should be treated cautiously.
