Nigeria may witness an early shift in its electoral calendar. The National Assembly has proposed that the next presidential and governorship elections, originally slated for February–March 2027, could instead be held in November 2026.
The proposed change comes from a draft amendment to the electoral law that recommends holding elections “not later than 185 days before the expiration of tenure” of current officeholders, whose terms end on 29 May 2027. If approved, this adjustment would officially move the elections forward by several months.
However, the proposal has not yet been signed into law. Some political actors have expressed concerns that an earlier election could affect election preparedness and strain electoral bodies. Until the amendment is officially passed, the default February–March 2027 timeline remains in effect.
Voters, political parties, and stakeholders are closely monitoring developments as the discussion over the electoral timeline continues.
