A mysterious flesh-eating disease has struck Adamawa State, Nigeria, leaving residents in shock and fear as dozens of people battle painful sores that destroy flesh and even bone.
According to reports from health authorities and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the strange illness first appeared in Malabu community, Fufore Local Government Area, with initial cases rapidly increasing.
Around 28 to 67 people have been affected by the disease in Adamawa.
Seven deaths have been officially reported. Some patients have been admitted to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, for treatment.
The condition is suspected to be Buruli ulcer, a rare infection caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans that destroys skin and soft tissue.
The Federal Government and NCDC are conducting laboratory tests to confirm the exact disease.
Health experts say the outbreak may be linked to environmental factors such as stagnant or swampy water, but investigations are still ongoing. Many infected residents reportedly avoid hospitals and prefer traditional treatment, raising concerns that more cases could go unreported.
The Federal Ministry of Health has urged residents to report suspicious skin ulcers early and maintain strict hygiene in affected areas. Officials have also warned against panic, saying the government is working to contain the spread and identify the root cause.
๐ฃ️Many Nigerians have taken to social media expressing fear and concern, calling for urgent medical intervention and awareness campaigns across rural communities.
While the exact cause remains unconfirmed, the Adamawa flesh-eating disease is a serious public health concern. Medical authorities continue to investigate and treat victims, with hopes of halting further spread.
