πŸ’” Tragedy at Wellington Bassey Barracks: Army Officer Dies After Wife Sets Him Ablaze in Akwa Ibom

Shock and sorrow have gripped Akwa Ibom State following a horrifying domestic incident that claimed the life of a Nigerian Army officer.

Reports confirm that Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a medical doctor serving with the 6th Battalion, Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa – Abak LGA, was set ablaze by his wife after a heated argument turned violent.

πŸ”₯ Eyewitnesses say the couple began arguing late at night when the wife allegedly poured petrol (PMS) on the officer and set him on fire inside their quarters.

Neighbors rushed to rescue him and he was quickly taken to the Military Reference Section (MRS) before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for advanced treatment.

Sadly, despite doctors’ efforts, Lt. Haruna succumbed to severe burns a few days later.

Military sources confirm the suspect has been arrested and is in custody pending a full investigation. Authorities are probing what triggered the confrontation and whether prior cases of domestic abuse had been reported.

A senior officer described the event as “a heartbreaking loss for the Army community,” urging couples to seek mediation rather than violence.

This tragedy highlights the growing need for mental-health support and domestic-violence prevention programs across military barracks. Social media users nationwide are mourning the officer while demanding justice and greater awareness about family crises.

“No one deserves to die this way. Marriage is not a war zone,” one Facebook user wrote.
