Stop Praising Presidents, Tell Them the Truth” — Sanusi Tells Ministers and Aides

Emir of Kano and former Central Bank Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has sent a powerful message to Nigerian ministers and presidential aides: stop praising presidents and start telling them the truth.

Speaking at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference and Book Launch in Abuja, Sanusi lamented that Nigeria’s leadership culture is filled with sycophancy — where officials prefer to flatter those in power rather than speak truth to them.

“We must stop this dangerous habit of praising presidents and leaders even when things are going wrong,” Sanusi said. “Leaders must be told the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.”

He stressed that many of Nigeria’s challenges — from economic mismanagement to poor governance — persist because top officials refuse to confront presidents with honest feedback.

Sanusi noted that this culture of blind loyalty has crippled accountability and allowed bad decisions to thrive unchecked. According to him, true patriotism means giving constructive criticism, not applause for failure.

The Emir also called on young Nigerians, technocrats, and civil servants to adopt integrity, courage, and a sense of responsibility in nation-building.

“History will not forgive us if we keep quiet while our country sinks deeper into poverty and division,” he added.

His statement has since drawn reactions across social media, with many Nigerians praising his boldness and calling for a new era of transparent governance.

Sanusi’s remarks highlight a long-standing issue in Nigerian politics — the tendency of aides and ministers to shield presidents from hard truths. His message serves as a reminder that national progress depends on honesty, not hero worship.
