Shock Claims: Repentant Boko Haram Fighters Leak Army Secrets to Terrorists

Reports emerging from the Northeast suggest that some repentant Boko Haram and ISWAP members may be leaking vital military information — including troop movements and armoury details — to active terrorist groups.

The shocking claims were reportedly made by frontline soldiers who spoke anonymously to a few independent media platforms, expressing frustration over what they described as “security compromises” involving reintegrated ex-fighters.

According to the reports, these so-called repentant insurgents, who are part of rehabilitation or deradicalisation programmes, allegedly relay operational intelligence back to their former terrorist networks — endangering troops and civilians in conflict-prone areas of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States.

While the reports have caused widespread concern, the Nigerian Army and Defence Headquarters have not issued any official statement confirming or denying the allegations.

In previous statements, the military maintained that repentant Boko Haram members are not absorbed into combat units but are instead placed in rehabilitation centres under the Operation Safe Corridor programme — designed to help deradicalise and reintegrate former insurgents into society.

Security experts warn, however, that the alleged leaks — if true — highlight the risks of premature reintegration and the challenge of verifying genuine repentance among surrendered terrorists.

Others argue that while forgiveness and rehabilitation are important for peacebuilding, national security must come first, and all former fighters should be subjected to strict monitoring and verification.

As of the time of this report, neither the Defence Headquarters nor the Ministry of Information has commented on the viral claims. Civil-society groups and security analysts are calling for a transparent investigation to either verify or debunk the allegations and reassure Nigerians that classified military information remains secure.

Until official confirmation or evidence emerges, these claims remain allegations — yet they underline growing public unease about the rehabilitation of ex-Boko Haram members and the delicate balance between peacebuilding and security in Nigeria’s Northeast.
