President Tinubu Grants Pardon to 175 Inmates, Including Farouk Lawan and Late Icons

In a significant gesture of compassion and national unity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted a presidential pardon and clemency to 175 inmates and former convicts across Nigeria.

The announcement, released through the State House press office in October 2025, marks one of the largest waves of presidential mercy in recent years.

⚖️ According to the official statement, the presidential pardon included.

82 inmates granted full clemency,

65 inmates with sentences reduced,

7 death row inmates whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, and

21 individuals given posthumous or special recognition for national contributions.

This act of mercy aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promoting justice reform and decongestion of correctional facilities nationwide.

🌟 Among those included in the pardon are:

Farouk Lawan, the former House of Representatives member convicted in a bribery scandal,

Herbert Macaulay, Nigeria’s nationalist and founding father (posthumous pardon),

The Ogoni Nine, environmental activists executed in 1995 (posthumous clemency),

Major General Mamman Vatsa, military officer executed under Buhari’s regime (posthumous pardon).

The inclusion of these names reflects the administration’s recognition of past injustices and commitment to reconciliation.

🕊️The presidential clemency follows recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM), which reviewed hundreds of inmate cases across Nigerian correctional facilities.

The decision aims to decongest prisons, foster reintegration, and give deserving individuals a second chance at life.

🗣️The announcement has stirred diverse reactions nationwide. While many praised the move as a step toward justice reform, others raised questions about the inclusion of politically exposed individuals.

Nonetheless, the gesture is being widely hailed as a symbol of forgiveness, fairness, and forward-thinking leadership.
