The Lagos State Police Command has issued a stern warning to activist and politician Omoyele Sowore and other groups planning to stage a protest over the ongoing demolition of illegal structures across the state.
The warning came after reports surfaced that Sowore and his supporters intended to hold a demonstration against the state government’s demolition policies, which have affected parts of Lagos, including informal settlements and waterfront communities.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh told journalists that the command has placed officers on high alert across key routes — including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki, and Ikeja areas — to prevent any unlawful assembly or obstruction of public peace.
“We are not against peaceful protests,” the CP said. “But any gathering that blocks highways, threatens lives, or disturbs public order will not be tolerated. Those planning to disrupt peace in Lagos should stay away.”
The police also warned that individuals who attempt to flout security directives will face the full weight of the law.
The Lagos State Government has recently intensified its demolition drive, targeting structures built along drainage channels, rail corridors, and government-acquired land. While officials insist the action is to prevent flooding and restore order, critics — including Sowore — describe it as anti-poor and inhumane.
The activist, known for his strong opposition to government policies, had earlier vowed to mobilize citizens in protest, accusing the state government of ignoring due process and displacing thousands without compensation.
The police warning has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians backing the government’s right to maintain order, while others see the move as an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.
Civil rights groups have called on both the police and protesters to maintain peace and respect the law.
