The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong warning to all intending protesters planning to stage demonstrations in support of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to reports confirmed by Vanguard and The Guardian, the police emphasized that no protest or agitation will be tolerated around Aso Rock Villa, National Assembly Complex, or other key federal government zones in Abuja.
The warning follows a court order granted by the Federal High Court, Abuja, on October 17, 2025, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025, which restrains protesters—including activist Omoyele Sowore and others—from staging any rally near the nation’s presidential enclave.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin reaffirmed the directive, urging all groups—whether for or against Nnamdi Kanu’s release—to respect the court order and maintain public peace.
He listed restricted areas such as:
Aso Rock Villa environs
National Assembly Complex
Force Headquarters
Court of Appeal
Eagle Square
Shehu Shagari Way
The police also reminded citizens that while the right to peaceful protest is protected by the constitution, it must be conducted in a lawful and safe manner that does not threaten national security or violate judicial rulings.
⚖️The ex-parte motion that led to the restriction was filed by the police to prevent planned mass protests tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow scheduled for October 20, 2025.
While some legal experts argue that the order should be revisited to balance citizens’ rights and public safety, the police maintain that the decision stands until further judicial review.
Some Nigerians support the move as a preventive security measure, while others accuse the government of clamping down on freedom of expression.
As of now, organizers of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement have not confirmed whether they will proceed or suspend the planned protest.
