Nigerian Senate Approves 10-Year Passport Ban for Convicted Citizens Abroad — A Bold Move to Restore Global Image
In a landmark decision aimed at protecting Nigeria’s global reputation, the Nigerian Senate has approved a bill that would impose a 10-year passport ban on citizens convicted of crimes abroad.
The bill, which amends the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, seeks to penalize Nigerians found guilty of criminal activities overseas by denying them access to international passports for a decade after serving their sentence.
According to Senate discussions, the new law is designed to deter Nigerians from tarnishing the country’s image and curb the growing cases of international fraud, drug trafficking, and cybercrime linked to some citizens abroad.
Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), who sponsored the bill, emphasized that the measure would help restore global confidence in Nigerian travelers and reduce visa rejections faced by law-abiding citizens.
If signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, the legislation will empower the Nigerian Immigration Service to enforce the ban strictly, ensuring that offenders cannot renew or obtain passports within the specified period.
The decision has sparked widespread debate among Nigerians at home and abroad, with some praising it as a step toward national integrity, while others see it as too harsh for those who have already served their sentences.
As Nigeria seeks to rebuild its international reputation, this bill could mark a turning point in how the world perceives Nigerian citizens globally.
