Nigerian Military Facebook Page Sparks Outrage with Veiled Threats Against Omoyele Sowore Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest
A Facebook page called Nigerian Military Gallery, which claims to represent Nigerian military personnel, has sparked nationwide outrage after posting messages perceived as veiled threats against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest on October 20, 2025.
On October 9, 2025, the page posted several statements that appeared to mock and subtly threaten Sowore and his supporters. One post read:
“Sowore and his cohorts have chosen 20th October for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest. We don hear.”
Another post drew parallels to the 2020 EndSARS protests, warning:
“EndSARS protest 20th October. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest 20th October. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
These posts have raised serious concerns about safety and potential state-backed intimidation, particularly as Sowore plans a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja to demand the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained since June 2021.
Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, urged supporters and political leaders from the South-East to participate in the protest peacefully, emphasizing the importance of concrete action over mere verbal support for Kanu’s release.
The posts have triggered a strong reaction from Nigerians online, many of whom interpret them as an attempt to intimidate citizens and suppress dissent. Given the military’s controversial role during past protests, such as EndSARS, the timing of these messages has fueled fears about possible violence and erosion of democratic freedoms.
As citizens and activists prepare for the October 20 march, the conversation around these veiled threats continues to highlight the tension between civic activism and state security forces in Nigeria.
