The Nigerian health sector faces fresh turmoil as doctors across the country have declared an indefinite nationwide strike under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced that the strike would begin at midnight on Saturday, November 1, 2025, after the government failed to address their long-standing grievances despite multiple warnings and negotiation attempts.
According to reports, the doctors’ union listed 19 key demands, including the payment of ₦38 billion in outstanding allowances, upgrading of hospital facilities, employment of more medical personnel, and regularisation of locum doctors across teaching and federal medical centres.
The association lamented that despite repeated promises by the Federal Ministry of Health and State Governments, many hospitals remain poorly equipped, salaries remain unpaid, and doctors are overworked without adequate welfare or insurance coverage.
The strike announcement has already triggered anxiety nationwide, especially as resident doctors make up the backbone of Nigeria’s healthcare system — handling emergency care, surgical operations, and specialist consultations in most tertiary hospitals.
Meanwhile, the federal government has yet to release an official response to the latest declaration. Analysts warn that if the strike continues, it could cripple the already strained healthcare system, leaving thousands of patients stranded.
This development adds to the growing list of labour unrests and industrial actions under Tinubu’s government, raising fresh questions about the administration’s ability to manage the health sector and workers’ welfare.
