Gowon Speaks on Unity and Reconciliation: Former Nigerian Leader Urges Healing, Not Division

Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has once again appealed for national unity and reconciliation, reminding citizens that the nation’s strength lies in togetherness, not division.

Speaking recently on the legacy of Nigeria’s post-war recovery, Gowon reaffirmed that his vision has always been about building bridges of peace, not walls of separation. His message comes at a time when conversations around the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and renewed calls for Igbo inclusion and reconciliation dominate the national space.

However, his long-standing stance on unity and forgiveness aligns with the spirit of dialogue many Nigerians believe is needed to heal decades of mistrust and marginalization.

“Nigeria’s future depends on unity, tolerance, and genuine reconciliation. We must continue to work together to rebuild our nation,” Gowon said in a previous reflection.

Across the country, various Igbo groups, including Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, have echoed similar sentiments—urging the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu as a gesture of goodwill and national healing. The convergence of these voices highlights an urgent need for dialogue and inclusion.

Gowon’s appeal serves as a timely reminder that Nigeria’s progress depends on a shared vision of peace, not on lingering bitterness. As the country navigates economic and political challenges, his message resonates as a call to forgive, rebuild, and move forward together.
