Jos, Nigeria — Fear and frustration have reached boiling point in Plateau State as youths and civic groups boldly demand the right to self-defense in the face of relentless attacks and growing insecurity.
Across communities plagued by banditry and communal violence, young people are saying “enough is enough.” They argue that while killers roam free, the innocent are left defenseless — and that must change.
⚔️A coalition known as the Concerned Plateau Youths (CPY) recently urged the federal government to allow residents to legally bear arms to protect themselves and their families.
According to the group, security forces often arrive long after attacks have occurred, leaving villages devastated and lives lost. “If the government cannot protect us, we must be empowered to protect ourselves,” one spokesperson declared.
⚖️Interestingly, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Plateau has also weighed in, urging the government to create a legal framework for self-defense and community protection.
Their statement emphasized that they are not encouraging lawlessness but rather seeking a regulated system that allows citizens in vulnerable areas to respond effectively when under attack.
⛪Support has also come from religious circles. The Catholic Bishop of Kaduna Archdiocese and several community leaders have echoed similar sentiments, arguing that self-defense is a moral duty when the state fails to provide safety.
They urge communities to form local vigilance groups, share intelligence, and remain alert — but to do so responsibly and within the law.
🚨 Security agencies, however, are treading cautiously. The Operation Safe Haven task force and the Nigerian military have warned against unregulated self-defense measures, fearing it could worsen the already volatile situation.
Officials worry about the proliferation of illegal arms and the possibility that such empowerment could lead to vigilantism or reprisal attacks.
đź’ĄThis new wave of demands reflects a growing loss of confidence in state security structures. Many Plateau residents feel abandoned as killings and kidnappings persist.
The calls for self-defense underscore the urgent need for credible reforms in Nigeria’s security system — one that protects every citizen equally, no matter their location or tribe.
🕊️Analysts believe that the solution lies in community policing, stronger intelligence networks, and better coordination between civilians and law enforcement.
For now, the message from Plateau’s youths is clear: they will no longer sit idle while their people are slaughtered.
