The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a social media user identified as Innocent Chukwuma, also known by his handle @TheAgroman, for allegedly calling on the Nigerian military to overthrow the current government.
According to multiple reports, the suspect was traced to Oyigbo, Rivers State, where DSS operatives apprehended him following a series of online posts encouraging soldiers to “take over power and suspend the APC-led government.”
Security sources confirmed that Chukwuma is in DSS custody and is being interrogated for statements considered to be a threat to national security and constitutional order.
An intelligence official stated that the agency has been monitoring his social media activities for weeks after he repeatedly posted messages that “could incite the public against the government.”
The DSS spokesperson emphasized that calls for a coup or any unconstitutional change of government are serious offenses under Nigerian law and would not be tolerated.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions online.
While some Nigerians supported the DSS for acting swiftly to prevent any attempt at destabilization, others expressed concern that the government might be clamping down on free speech.
A civil rights group, however, warned that while freedom of expression must be protected, incitement to treason or military takeover crosses a legal red line.
As of the time of this report, the DSS has not disclosed formal charges, but legal experts suggest that the suspect could face prosecution under Nigeria’s anti-treason laws, which carry heavy penalties.
Observers say this arrest sends a strong warning to social media users to exercise caution and avoid statements capable of threatening national security.
