In a shocking turn of events, a combined team of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Nigerian Army personnel came under heavy attack by hoodlums suspected to be drug barons in Ukpuje town, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to reports from The Guardian and Leadership, the officers were on an anti-narcotics mission when they were ambushed by the armed criminals who opened fire on their convoy. The area, notorious for large-scale cannabis cultivation and trafficking, quickly turned into a battlefield.
Eyewitnesses said the operatives engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle before regaining control of the situation. Unfortunately, one NDLEA officer sustained injuries to his hand during the encounter. He has since been treated and is said to be in stable condition.
The NDLEA has condemned the attack, describing it as a desperate attempt by drug traffickers to resist law enforcement efforts. Security forces have since reinforced their presence in the area as investigations continue.
This latest incident highlights the growing risks faced by anti-drug officers across Nigeria, especially in regions with entrenched drug networks and armed resistance.
Authorities have vowed to track down the perpetrators and ensure that all those responsible for the ambush are brought to justice. The NDLEA and the Nigerian Army reaffirmed their joint commitment to eradicating drug trafficking across Edo and the entire country.
