In a dramatic turn of events, Christopher Ogugua Nwoye, the owner of Happy Home Orphanage in Asaba, Delta State, has officially surrendered to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). This comes after months of investigation and multiple summonses ignored by Nwoye.
Accompanied by his lawyer and four women claiming to be mothers of some of the children rescued, Nwoye arrived at NAPTIP headquarters in Abuja on October 9, 2025, for questioning. This follows a June 2025 operation where NAPTIP rescued eight children who were allegedly stolen from Kano State.
Investigations revealed that Nwoye purchased seven of these children from an associate of Hauwa Abubakar, who was previously arrested in Gombe State for selling 21 children. Nwoye has since confessed to the crime and returned four of the rescued children.
Currently out on bail, Nwoye is facing trial alongside Abubakar and her associate, Nkechi Odlyne, in Gombe State. NAPTIP has emphasized that the operation was fully lawful under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. DNA tests are being conducted to confirm the parentage of the children before reunification.
This shocking development underscores the importance of vigilance in child welfare and the ongoing battle against human trafficking in Nigeria.
