Breaking: Veteran Nollywood Actor Duro Michael Dies After Battle With Illness”

The Nigerian film industry is in mourning today as news breaks that veteran Nollywood actor Duro Michael has passed away. His death follows a long struggle with illness that kept him away from the screen in his later years.

In this tribute, we remember his contributions to Nollywood, the battle he endured, and how his legacy will live on.

According to AllAfrica, Duro Michael died at age 67 after prolonged illness.

Premium Times confirms that he had been battling diabetes, which led to severe complications including the amputation of one of his legs.

PM News reports that his health had deteriorated over the years, with limited mobility and dependence on support.

A film colleague, Stanley Ontop, announced the news in an Instagram post, lamenting how artists often fail to support one another.

Duro Michael acted in several Nollywood productions, including Midnight Love (2003) and The Guilty (2006).

In his later years, he faced financial and health challenges. In 2022, Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin contributed ₦5 million toward his treatment.

As his condition worsened, he appealed publicly to producers for acting opportunities and assistance.

The announcement triggered waves of condolences from colleagues, fans, and industry watchers

Many lamented how Nollywood lacks a stronger safety net for aging actors facing illness or financial hardship.

Stanley Ontop’s post expressed frustration that film industry stakeholders often do not support one another in times of need.

Duro Michael’s journey reminds us:

  1. Talent doesn’t always guarantee security — his health struggles and financial difficulties highlight vulnerabilities even for well-known actors.

  2. The need for institutional support — Nollywood may benefit from structures to assist veterans with health care, pensions, or welfare.

  3. Remembering the roles, not just the name — he left behind films and moments that contributed to Nigeria’s storytelling.

  4. More details may emerge about his funeral arrangements, tributes, and how his family will carry on his legacy.

  5. The public and industry may push for reforms to protect artists from such predicaments in future.

Conclusion

The passing of Veteran Nollywood Actor Duro Michael is a somber moment for the Nigerian entertainment world. While his final years were fraught with hardship, his contributions to Nollywood cannot be erased.

May his soul rest in peace — and may his story inspire better care, support, and unity among artists.
