All courts across Kaduna State have been shut down indefinitely as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) begin a statewide strike to press home their demands for financial autonomy and unpaid entitlements.
From the Federal High Court to Magistrate and Customary Courts, judicial activities have been completely grounded. Court gates were locked, and banners announcing the industrial action were placed at entrances, signaling a total withdrawal of services.
According to the union, the strike followed the Kaduna State Government’s failure to implement full judicial financial autonomy and address long-standing issues of salary arrears, allowances, and welfare packages for judiciary workers.
Union leaders said several appeals and negotiations had been ignored, leaving them no choice but to shut down the courts until their grievances are resolved.
“We have waited long enough. Our members deserve better. The autonomy of the judiciary is not negotiable,” said one of the JUSUN officials.
The indefinite strike means no court sittings, no bail hearings, and no filing of new cases until further notice.
Lawyers and litigants who arrived at various courts on Monday morning were turned away, as security officials enforced the shutdown order.
Legal experts warn the strike could worsen the backlog of cases and delay justice for detainees awaiting trial in Kaduna correctional centers.
As of press time, the Kaduna State Government has not issued an official statement regarding the strike. However, stakeholders are calling on Governor Uba Sani to step in urgently to resolve the crisis and restore normal judicial activities.
