A devastating collapse at an illegal gold mining site in Kadauri, Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State has plunged the community into grief, with many lives lost and others still missing.
On Thursday, after hours of heavy rainfall, the ground at the mouth of a gold mining pit gave way. A huge boulder crashed down, burying miners inside. It happened at one of several unauthorised pits in Kadauri.
Artisanal miners—many working in unsafe conditions—were underground or around the pit when the collapse occurred. Reports say more than 100 people were involved.
Early estimates claim 100+ miners were at the site during the disaster.
At least 13 bodies have been recovered so far, with many more feared dead. Some miners were rescued but injured.
Others remain trapped as rescue operations continue. Rescuers are battling difficult conditions, including mud, unstable ground, and limited equipment.
This tragedy is unfolding in a region where illegal or artisanal gold mining is common, often with little regulation, safety oversight, or proper infrastructure.
Heavy rainfall is a recurring risk factor, especially for superficial or unstable mining pits that are not reinforced or properly managed.
