Stop Wasting Money on School! The Shocking Advice Telling Parents to Pull Daughters Out of Class

A controversial statement is sparking a firestorm across Nigerian social media: one young man is publicly advising parents to stop sending their daughters to school if they cannot afford the full fees.

In a viral video, the man argues that if a family is financially strapped, the little money available shouldn’t be risked on an incomplete or unsupported education for a girl. His blunt message has divided opinions, forcing a difficult conversation about economic reality versus the dream of education.

The man's stance is a purely pragmatic one, rooted in the harsh economic challenges facing low-income Nigerian families.

His advice: Forget the classroom and open a shop.

"It is better to train a girl in a trade, open a shop for her, and make sure she becomes good at what she does, rather than sending her to school and leaving her stranded."

He views formal education as a high-risk investment. In his mind, an unfinished degree or a certificate without connections often leaves a young woman stranded and possibly in debt. A trade, however, provides an immediate, guaranteed path to income and self-sufficiency, ensuring she has a tangible means of survival.

While his point about financial security is understandable, critics are pushing back hard, calling the advice short-sighted and gender-biased. The most significant objection is that this advice intentionally limits a girl's potential and access to a wider range of career paths. A basic trade is one opportunity; a quality education is a gateway to countless others—from technology and medicine to finance and governance.

The Value of Empowerment: Education offers benefits that can't be measured in naira and kobo. It is a powerful tool for empowerment, critical thinking, and social awareness, allowing women to make informed decisions about their health, finances, and future.

Gender Bias: By singling out only female children, the advice suggests that a son's education is inherently a greater priority and worth the financial risk, thereby reinforcing outdated gender roles that hold society back.

This viral clip has laid bare the painful dilemma facing many Nigerian families: do you chase the dream of a degree or settle for the guarantee of a trade?
