A political statement attributed to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has ignited a massive controversy, raising serious questions about ethnic balancing and the future of Nigeria's unity.
The statement, which has been widely reported since September 24, 2025, is a direct and blunt promise regarding top government appointments:
"Yorubas will occupy key positions in my government, not Hausa-Fulani.”
The severity of this quote cannot be overstated. In a nation governed by the Federal Character Principle, which mandates inclusiveness and national spread in appointments, a statement that appears to completely exclude a major ethnic bloc—the Hausa-Fulani—is being viewed by many as political dynamite. Supporters and analysts suggest the statement, even if harsh, is a strategic reaction. Atiku has been a frequent critic of previous administrations for what he perceived as a failure to uphold the Federal Character Principle, often alleging that appointments were lopsided in favour of one region or group.
If taken in context, this could be seen as an aggressive attempt to reassure the
South-West (Yoruba) region—a vital political base—that their interests will be prioritized and that the imbalance, in his view, will be drastically corrected.
However, critics argue that the solution to lopsided appointments is inclusion and fairness across all geopolitical zones, not simply replacing one excluded group with another. The statement, as quoted, appears to violate the very spirit of the Constitution.
